The creek at Carriage Hill

Today we went to Carriage Hill Metro park to learn about life on a farm in the 19th century. We had the day to walk around and explore the farm and the park. We saw the chickens, a quail, a donkey, cows, sheep, and goats. I also saw the blacksmith creating something. We waded in the creek, and saw a snake. We then had lunch, and went to the Country Store and got candy by the cent. We also got candy bags from the teachers (If you are reading this, thank you for the candy bags!)

I learned many things about life on the farm. Farmers, even their children, are constantly busy with chores. Many children on the farm also don't go to school. If they do, they only go for a few years. They value taking care of the farm than an education. Farming families also don't have much time to relax. They are very hard workers. They have a special connection with nature and the outdoors, since they are always outdoors. I think living on a farm makes you live more deliberately because farmers' lives are centered around one common goal- to have a successful farm. They live with purpose and with a goal, which is what "living deliberately" means. If you live on a farm, you would also spend more time outdoors, so you have more time to think about your goals and purpose in life. That is how living on a farm makes you live more deliberately.

We also wrote a narrative/poem in the point of view of a person or object on the farm. I wrote a poem about the life of an 11 year-old girl on the farm named Ann. Here is my poem below-

"I wake up and get out of my bed

Today is to be a hard day, that’s what momma said.

I go milk the cows and water the potatoes

Bathe the goats, from their heads to their toes.

I gather the rocks and sticks that have landed on the path

That’s supposed to be Sally’s job, but she’s facin’ father’s wrath

She snuck out last night with her friends, and father found out,

So she’s in her room, to sit about and pout.

The day’s half done, and there still so much to do,

I guess momma won’t mind if I rest for a few

I run to the little swing by the little creek

I sit down for a bit, the hot sun beating down on my cheek.

But I mustn’t linger for long,

I don’t want father to yell at me for all my wrongs.

I continue with my chores, until the work is done.

At least tomorrow is Sunday, and I can have some fun!"

Here are a few pictures from the field trip!
